 Abstract:  Carlos Parsons Lyman (b. 1838) was a private in the 6th Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Cavalry and later Captain in the 100th Regiment, United States Colored Infantry during the American Civil War. His family resided in Mesopotamia, Ohio. The letters and diaries provide a detailed record of his activities while at Camp Dennison and Camp Chase in Ohio (1861-1862), in Virginia and Washington, D. C. (1862-1864), and in Tennessee and Missouri (1864-1865). The collection consists of letters and diaries of Carlos Lyman written during the Civil War, an autobiographical sketch, an 1859 diary, and family papers, including agreement and land deeds, certificates, financial receipts and newspaper clippings.

 Abstract:  George A. Sosman was a farmer in Chillicothe, Ohio. John F. Sosman served in the 73rd Ohio Infantry Regiment during the Civil War. Frank A. Sosman was a clerk and bookkeeper in Chillicothe. The collection consists of letters to George and Lucretia Browning Sosman (1835-1845) from Wesley and Phebe Browning, concerning religious conferences in the Midwest and manual-labor schools among the Shawnee and Choctaw Indians; diaries of George Sosman (1853-1859), with comments on his farming activities; letters of John F. Sosman from Virginia during the Civil War; and diaries of Frank S. Sosman (1867-1869).

His sons, Reuben, Henry, and Peter Jr., entered the judiciary, ministry and politics respectively and were affiliated with Burton Academy, Western Reserve College and the Atlantic and Great Western Railway Company. the collection consists of correspondence of family members and miscellaneous papers relating to Western Reserve College, Burton Academy, the Atlantic and Great Western Railway and the early history of Burton, Ohio.

The collection consists of correspondence, diaries, mementos, unpublished short stories and poetry, and other materials relating to the World War I experiences and artistic career of Paul Travis, and to the genealogy of Marjorie Penfield Travis. Includes diaries and correspondence of her grandparents, William L. and Lucy E. Wood.

 Abstract:  Charles H Smith (1837-1912) was a Cleveland, Ohio, grain merchant who had served as an officer in the 27th Ohio Infantry Regiment during the American Civil War. His wife, Louisa Johnson Smith (1847-1932), was a humanitarian and civic leader in Cleveland. The collection consists of correspondence, muster rolls, general and special orders, reports of ordnance stores, returns, affidavits from the court-martial of John W. Mercer, legal documents about land purchases in Kansas, minutes of reunions of Fuller's Ohio Brigade, the Society of the Tennessee, and the Loyal Legion, speeches and miscellaneous notes and papers used in writing The History of Fuller's Ohio Brigade, and other military papers of Charles H. Smith; and correspondence, programs and papers from various patriotic organizations, speeches, and an incomplete scrapbook of Louisa Johnson Smith.

 Abstract:  Warren Lane was a Berea, Ohio, farmer and storekeeper. His son, Charles F., was Mayor of Berea (1900-1902) and an Ohio state representative (1904-1905). In 1878 Charles married Delia, the daughter of James Wheller, a shoemaker in Cuyahoga and Lorain counties. The collection consists of correspondence, legal and financial documents, diaries, account books, newspaper clippings, verse, and essays of members of the Lane and Wheller families.

 Abstract:  Jeremiah Browning Mansfield, the son of Samuel and Elizabeth Mansfield, was born in 1841 in Ohio, and raised on his father's farm in Wayne Township, Jefferson County, Ohio. He and his older brother Oliver served in the 52nd Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry during the American Civil War. Jeremiah Mansfield participated in the Battles of Chickamauga and the Battle of Perrysville, and then served at Camp Sheridan in Nashville, Tennessee until the end of the war. He and Elizabeth Taggart Mansfield were married in Harrison County, Ohio in 1869. She was born in 1845 in Harrison County, Ohio, and received a teaching certificate in 1863. Her brother, Milton, attended Oberlin College and Michigan Law School. By 1880, Jeremiah and Elizabeth Mansfield had settled in Wells Township, Jefferson County, Ohio, where they farmed and raised five children. The collection consists of correspondence, essays, and miscellany relating to the Mansfield and Taggart families; Jefferson and Harrison counties, Ohio; the Civil War; and Oberlin College and Michigan Law School. The papers include letters written over a twenty-year period to James Carrick, an early settler of Harrison County, Ohio and ancestor of the Mansfield/Taggart family.

 Abstract:  Hiram P. Oviatt (1821-1872) was a soldier in Battery K of the 1st Ohio Light Artillery Regiment. The collection consists of correspondence, diaries, land deeds, and military papers, relating to Oviatt and his wife, Lucy Ann Bullard Oviatt. Includes diary kept by Oviatt while he was prospecting for gold in California in 1850; two letters (1827-1828) containing references to political conditions in Canada; and papers concerning members of the Bullard, Hamilton, and Oviatt families of Euclid, Ohio. Other correspondents include Hannah Bullard and Tyler Parker.

 Abstract:  Abel Larkin (1764-1830) of Lancaster, Massachusetts and Rutland, Vermont, settled in Rutland, Ohio, in 1804. He served as township clerk, justice of the peace, and associate justice for Meigs County. Abel Jr. and Stillman C. Larkin were his sons. The collection consists of correspondence, family histories, legal and financial documents, account books, church records, speeches, invitations, and writings, of Abel Larkin Sr., Abel Larkin Jr., Stillman C. Larkin, and other members of their family. Includes records of the Chillicothe Methodist Church and Civil War correspondence of James E. Bullock, who served with the 116th Regt. of Ohio Infantry.
